About the artist
A lifetime spent watching, sketching, and painting wildlife.
David Nix of Cottondale, Alabama has been painting since childhood. In a 2010 Tuscaloosa News profile, he described a lifelong habit rather than a commercial project: “I started painting when I was six years old,” and “I've always painted ever since I was little.”
His work grew out of patience, persistence, and time outdoors. After submitting waterfowl paintings to the Alabama Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest for 26 years without winning, Nix told the paper, “I guess you have to be persistent,” adding, “I enjoy it even when I don't win it.”
Wildlife — especially birds and ducks — became the center of that work. Nix said he painted only wildlife for about 30 years and explained it simply: “I love to paint birds.” He also carried a camera while outdoors, using field observation around ponds, woods, and hunting stands as reference for the birds and habitat details that appear in his paintings.

Alabama Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest
Published sources document David Nix as a three-time Alabama Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest winner. The 2010 article reported his American wigeon acrylic painting would appear on the 2011–2012 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp and noted his earlier 2006 blue-winged teal win; later Alabama conservation coverage documented his third win with Canada geese.
